Hawarden Apartments Destroyed in Fire

An apartment complex was destroyed in a fire early Tuesday morning in Hawarden.

According to Hawarden Fire Chief Duane Schiefen, the Hawarden Fire Department was called to the report of an apartment building on fire on 8th Street at about 4:30 Tuesday morning.  Firefighters could see flames from the front of the building as they approached the scene.  Everyone was able to get out of the structure, and no injuries were reported.

Schiefen says three of the five units sustained damage, one of them more heavily with the other two sustaining mainly smoke and heat damage.

Schiefen says firefighters were on the scene until about 7:30 a.m.  At this time, the cause of the fire is undetermined.

The American Red Cross was called in to assist the tenants with alternate living arrangements.
