Wednesday marked the first day back to school for Harris–Lake Park elementary students following last Friday’s boiler malfunction that forced classes to temporarily relocate.
Superintendent Mike Thompson says the return went smoothly, even with students and staff sharing space in the middle school and high school.
Thompson says the district already had contingency plans in place, including a long-standing agreement with the Presbyterian Church to assist in situations like this. That agreement includes provisions for liability insurance and reimbursement for utility costs.
Damage assessments at the elementary building are now underway as the district works with ServiceMaster and its insurance provider.
The superintendent adds the district is hopeful to reopen the elementary gym, which was not as heavily impacted, and is also optimistic the move into the new elementary building could happen sooner than originally planned — now possibly in a little more than a month instead of later in March.
Thompson provided the updates during a special school board meeting on Wednesday evening.
