Fire Destroys Barn and Livestock

A barn and the livestock inside were destroyed in a fire on Monday afternoon near Sheldon.

According to Sheldon Fire Chief Brad Hindt, the call came at about 4:25 p.m., reporting the barn fire on Log Avenue, two miles west and a mile north of the Sheldon Motel.

Hindt says when they arrived, the barn was completely burned down. He says firefighters protected the surrounding area around the barn and then worked on extinguishing the barn and the large amount of hay that had been in the barn.

The barn was a total loss, as were about 17 goats and 36 chickens.

The cause of the fire is undetermined, but it was most likely caused by a heating lamp as the owner said that he just had baby goats last week and was keeping them warm.

Firefighters were on the scene for about two-and-a-half hours.
