The Federal Emergency Management Agency has announced more than $62 million in disaster recovery grants awarded across Iowa following the 2024 floods.
Included in that statewide total are allocations for Rock Valley and several northwest Iowa entities. However, the reimbursement funding listed for the City of Rock Valley and the Rock Valley Community School District was first reported locally last week.
On February 19th, FEMA Region 7 announced approval of more than $3.7 million for the City of Rock Valley and more than $5.7 million for the Rock Valley Community School District. City officials later clarified that the final total for the city’s five approved reimbursement applications is $3,495,000, covering 75 percent of $4.66 million in eligible flood recovery expenses already paid.
The FEMA release also includes additional allocations not previously detailed in last week’s report:
-More than $8.4 million combined for Rock Valley Community School District and Rock Valley Christian School
-More than $10 million for the City of Rock Valley and Rock Valley Residential Housing
-More than $3 million for Osceola County
-More than $4.1 million for the Little Sioux Inter-County Drainage District
-More than $1.1 million for the City of Cherokee
-More than $700,000 for the City of Rock Rapids
Rock Valley City Administrator Tom Van Maanen says while the reimbursements are significant, major projects are still pending federal approval.
Those projects include the reconstruction of the public library and the city shop. The city is also awaiting final approval on its proposed $35 million home buyout program.
Officials say they will continue providing updates as additional federal reviews are completed.
