Emergency Crews Respond to Oil Spill on Highway 75

Sioux Center firefighters had a messy situation to clean up Friday evening along Highway 75.

At about 5:20 p.m., Sioux County Communications paged the Sioux Center Fire Department and Sioux Center Ambulance to the area in front of Agrivision for a reported used oil spill.

Fire Chief David Van Holland says a 200-gallon tank of used oil was not secured on a flatbed truck, fell onto the highway, and spilled its contents across the roadway.

Crews closed one lane of Highway 75 while they worked to contain and clean up the spill. Van Holland says firefighters used payloader buckets filled with sand along with Floor-Dri absorbent material to soak up the oil.

The Sioux Center Police Department and Iowa State Patrol assisted at the scene. Van Holland says a state trooper planned to contact the Iowa Department of Natural Resources to determine whether additional response was necessary.

Firefighters were on scene for approximately one hour and the highway was back open by 6:20 p.m.
