Dordt University launched a new Nurse Practitioner Program on Tuesday.
Dordt University is stepping up to meet a critical need in rural healthcare. The University recently celebrated the launch of its new Master of Science in Nursing–Family Nurse Practitioner program, or MSN-FNP. Greg Van Dyke, Vice President for Enrollment, lays out how this marks a historic expansion for the university’s academic profile.
The program is designed specifically with working professionals in mind. With a total of 48 credits, it offers a flexible path for registered nurses to advance their careers without stepping away from their current roles. Nursing professor Kate Vander Veen lays out how the curriculum is structured to fit a nurse’s busy schedule.
Beyond the flexible schedule, the program emphasizes a distinct “Christian-perspective”. On a recent episode of The Daily Grind, Kate Vander Veen, professor of nursing at Dordt, discussed how the program aims to train Christian nurses.
The first cohort is set to begin in the fall of 2026, with students completing 750 clinical hours right in their own home communities. All Iowa gubernatorial candidates have expressed the need to improve healthcare access for Iowans.
