Dordt Professor Appointed to Iowa STEM Advisory Council

Dr. Jeff Ploegstra, dean of foundational and health sciences and professor of biology at Dordt University, has been appointed to the Iowa Governor’s STEM Advisory Council as a Regional Advisory Board member.

The council, led by the Iowa Department of Education, works to strengthen the state’s PK–12 pipeline into science, technology, engineering, and math careers by supporting schools, fostering business partnerships, and recognizing outstanding teachers.

In his new role, Ploegstra will collaborate with leaders in education, business, and civic sectors to review program applications, support STEM initiatives, and volunteer at events ranging from science fairs to county fairs.

“I am happy to be of service to this corner of the state and to build connections with other STEM professionals,” Ploegstra said.

Dordt Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Leah Zuidema said Ploegstra’s appointment reflects the university’s mission of service and scholarship. “We need more Christians actively involved in STEM fields, and I appreciate Dr. Ploegstra’s willingness to help shape the future of STEM education so that there is space for Christian perspectives,” she said.
