It’s that time of year — when ice begins forming on northwest Iowa lakes, and anglers start heading out for ice fishing. But before venturing out, officials are reminding people to check conditions carefully.
Andrew Carlson, a fisheries management biologist with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, says ice thickness varies by lake across the Iowa Great Lakes region.
Carlson says when it comes to putting vehicles on the ice, thicker is always better.
He adds that safety precautions should always be taken — even when ice appears solid.
The Iowa DNR reminds anglers that no ice is ever 100 percent safe and advises against going out on the ice alone. For more ice safety tips, visit iowadnr.gov.
