Crittenton Center Receives Grant for Recycling Education Project

Crittenton Center has received a $2,000 Build with Bags Grant to support environmental education and sustainability efforts at its Stella Sanford Child Development Center West location.

The grant was awarded through a partnership between the Iowa Grocery Industry Association, Keep Iowa Beautiful, Metro Waste Authority, and Plastic Recycling of Iowa Falls.

Funding will be used to purchase an outdoor magnetic chalkboard made from recyclable materials, which will be added to the center’s Outdoor Learning Center. The new equipment is designed to provide preschool children with hands-on learning opportunities while encouraging outdoor exploration and creativity.

As part of the project, Crittenton Center plans to incorporate recycling and sustainability lessons into classroom activities during the week leading up to America Recycles Day on November 15.

Children will participate in age-appropriate activities focused on environmental stewardship, recycling, reducing waste, and caring for natural resources.

Crittenton Center CEO Kim Scorza says the project provides a meaningful opportunity to introduce young children to environmental responsibility while also engaging families in sustainability efforts that benefit the broader community.

The initiative will extend beyond the classroom through a special Recycling Week for families.

Parents and caregivers will be invited to visit the enhanced Outdoor Learning Center, learn about the new educational equipment, and participate in recycling efforts by bringing plastic bags to the center for collection and recycling.

Families will also receive information about local recycling drop-off locations for plastic bags and other recyclable materials, helping encourage year-round participation in sustainability efforts.

According to Crittenton Center, the project aligns with its commitment to providing innovative educational experiences that support the development of the whole child while fostering community involvement.

Founded in 1895, Crittenton Center provides child and family development services through child care, family resource centers, and child welfare programs, serving homeless and foster-care youth throughout Iowa.
