Courthouse Burglary Suspect Faces New Felony Charge After Jail Incident

One of the men accused in the Lyon County Courthouse burglary case now faces an additional felony charge following an incident at the Lyon County Jail in Rock Rapids.

A criminal complaint filed by the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office alleges that 18-year-old Luciano Sanchez of Denver, Colorado, threw a cup of urine on a corrections officer while being held in jail.

According to the complaint, the officer was assisting an uninvolved inmate when she heard a popping sound. Believing the noise did not come from Sanchez’s cell — which was supposed to be secured — she turned and allegedly saw Sanchez throw the cup of urine into her face.

Sanchez has been charged with assault by an inmate with bodily fluids, a class D felony. If convicted, the charge carries a potential sentence of up to five years in prison, in addition to any penalties stemming from the courthouse burglary case.

Sanchez is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing on January 19th.

At last report, he remained in the Lyon County Jail in Rock Rapids, held on a $25,000 bond for the courthouse burglary charges and an additional $5,000 bond for the new assault charge.
