A broken steam valve in the school’s boiler system is forcing Harris–Lake Park Elementary students to attend classes in temporary locations over the coming weeks.
Superintendent Mike Thompson says the issue occurred on Friday and caused significant damage. Because of health and safety concerns, he says staff have not been able to access the building.
As a result, there were no classes yesterday, and there will be no classes again today. Thompson says administrators met with teachers and staff yesterday morning to finalize plans. Classes are expected to resume on Wednesday, with students split between alternative locations.
The disruption comes just weeks before the district’s new elementary building is scheduled to open.
Thompson says elementary students will remain in the temporary locations until the move into the new building takes place.
He also says the district has received an outpouring of support from the community since the incident.
Thompson also thanked other school leaders for their assistance in developing contingency plans.
