Blowing Debris Hits Vehicles on Hwy 60

On Monday, June 2, at 6:12 p.m., the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office investigated motor vehicle accidents that occurred on Highway 60, two miles north of Hospers, Iowa, that resulted because of a severe thunderstorm. Sioux County Deputy Sheriff and Emergency Management Coordinator, Nate Huizenga, provided some details on the incident near Hospers.

Huizenga thinks the damage was localized and not a tornado.

Brandy Wright, age 39, of Sheldon, IA, was driving a 2013 Volkswagen Jetta northbound on Highway 60. Daniel Schroeder, age 43, of Eagle Bend, Minnesota, was driving a 2016 Freightliner northbound on Highway 60. Both vehicles were struck by debris that blew onto the Highway during a severe thunderstorm.

Wright reported no injuries; Schroeder was treated for minor injuries.

The Volkswagen sustained approximately $8,000 in damage; the Freightliner sustained approximately $5,000 in damage.

The sheriff’s office was assisted by the Iowa State Patrol, Hospers Fire Department, Hospers Ambulance, Boyden Fire Department, Granville Fire Department, Iowa Department of Transportation, Sioux County Highway Department, Obrien County Emergency Management and Sioux County Conservation.

Other Sheriff’s alerts from that evening, included: trees down over roadway, railroad cross-arms malfunctioning, and power lines down across the roadway in areas around Sioux County.
