Bethel CRC in Sioux Center is hosting a Divorce Support Group for men and women currently going through divorce or who are recently divorced.
On a recent Daily Grind episode, Marcia (Marsha) Van Voorst and Holly Case talked about Bethel CRC’s Divorce Support Group. Both of them led the support group last year and will be leading it again this year.
Van Voorst lays out who benefited from the support group last year.
“Anybody that’s separated or recently divorced or even been divorced for many years. It seemed like they all benefited.”
Bethel provides the books for everyone in the group and provides childcare for people who need it. The books make up the curriculum that Van Voorst and Case use. Van Voorst describes some of what’s in the curriculum.
“We’re going to go go through the divorce care curriculum again. We’re going to deal with the hurt of divorce, recovery, anger, grief, and depression. The conflict that comes with it, forgiveness that needs to happen. Dealing with your former spouse and how you live single and how things are going to get better.”
Kaleigh Van Middendorp was a member of the group last year and was also a guest on the Daily Grind. She explains what she found to be most helpful from the group.
“The understanding that divorce was never God’s intent. And I don’t think anybody enters a marriage with the intent to get divorced. Most people who are in the divorce group all said like, I never saw my life going this way. So I think there’s that deep understanding of there’s so much grief there when you see this covenant relationship broken, just as you see a lot in the Bible with God’s covenant relationship with his people being broken repeatedly. So I think that was really impactful to realize that nobody understands the pain of divorce like God does, because he’s seen it time and again.”
The Support Group starts August 27th at 6:30 pm at Bethel’s second location called “The Lighthouse,” located at 42 3rd St SW in Sioux Center. You can preregister by texting or calling 760-715-1796. Preregistration is recommended and is required if you need childcare.
