Authorities: Fatal ILCC Bus Crash Site on Highway 4 has History of Deadly Accidents

Authorities say the stretch of roadway where Wednesday’s fatal Iowa Lakes Community College bus crash occurred has a history of serious and deadly crashes.

Speaking during a press conference last Thursday, Iowa State Patrol Lieutenant Aaron Smidt said the crash happened along an S-curve on Highway 4, about a mile and a half north of Highway 20 in Calhoun County — a location troopers know well.

Smidt said the bus left the roadway while navigating the curve and entered the ditch. The crash resulted in one fatality and multiple injuries, though authorities have not yet released a final determination on what caused the bus to leave the road.

Investigators continue to examine the scene, vehicle condition, and other contributing factors. Lieutenant Smidt emphasized the cause of the crash remains under investigation.

The crash involved an Iowa Lakes Community College bus carrying members of the school’s baseball team.

Authorities say additional information will be released as the investigation continues.
