At Least One Dead in a Bus Crash Involving Iowa Lakes Baseball Team

A charter bus carrying members of the Iowa Lakes Community College baseball team crashed late Wednesday morning in Calhoun County, resulting in at least one fatality and sending multiple passengers to the hospital.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, the crash occurred shortly after 11 a.m. on Wednesday, February 11, on Iowa Highway 4 near 220th Street, just west of Twin Lakes.

Authorities say the bus was carrying 33 people at the time of the crash. Troopers report injuries ranging from minor to serious. Officials at the scene confirmed at least one person has died, but the victim’s identity has not yet been released pending notification of the family.

Investigators say only the bus was involved in the crash and that it reportedly rolled multiple times before coming to rest.

College Confirms Team Was Traveling To Arkansas

In a statement issued Wednesday afternoon, Iowa Lakes Community College confirmed members of its baseball team were on the bus at the time of the crash. A student told our Media Partner KTIV that the team was traveling to Arkansas for a scheduled game.

The college says emergency personnel responded immediately and that injured individuals were transported to area medical facilities for evaluation and care. Some of those hurt were reportedly airlifted to a hospital in Des Moines.

“The safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our highest priority,” the college said in its statement. “The College is actively supporting those affected and communicating directly with families.”

The college added that it is working closely with local authorities and emergency responders to gather confirmed information.

Out of respect for the privacy of those involved and their families, Iowa Lakes says it will not release names or additional details at this time.

Highway Closed For Hours

As of 1:45 p.m., Iowa Highway 4 remained closed in the area of the crash as authorities continued their investigation and cleanup efforts.

The cause of the crash has not yet been released. The Iowa State Patrol says the investigation remains ongoing.
