As fireworks light up the sky and grills fire up across the Midwest, AAA is reminding Independence Day revelers to think twice before getting behind the wheel after a few celebratory drinks. The Auto Club Group is once again rolling out its “Tow to Go” program—offering a safety net for impaired drivers who find themselves without a plan.
The service, which has quietly helped remove nearly 30,000 intoxicated drivers from U.S. roads over the past two decades, is available in Iowa and several other states from 6 p.m. Friday, July 4 through 6 a.m. Monday, July 7. It provides a free, confidential ride—and a tow for their vehicle—within a 10-mile radius, no AAA membership required.
“By offering Tow to Go, AAA helps ensure there’s no excuse for impaired driving,” said Stephanie Milani, spokesperson for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “Plan ahead, but if your plans change, we’re here as a last resort to help you get home safely.”
The timing is no coincidence. Independence Day is one of the most dangerous holidays on American roads, with nearly one-third of all U.S. traffic deaths involving alcohol. In 2023 alone, 12,429 people lost their lives in alcohol-related crashes, with one life lost every 42 minutes.
AAA encourages people to make safe choices before heading out—but offers Tow to Go as a backup plan for those moments when plans go awry. Calls can be made to (855) 2-TOW-2-GO, though availability may be limited in rural areas or during severe weather.
For Iowans planning holiday festivities, it’s a simple message with life-saving potential: Don’t drive impaired—tow it instead.
