Granville — A collision between a pickup truck and a school bus near Granville on Tuesday morning resulted in 20 individuals being transported to various hospitals. The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office reports that just before 7:45 am, 23-year-old Elliot Dykstra of Alton was driving a Ford F-150 eastbound on 430th Street when he collided with a Unity Christian school bus driven by 76-year-old John Kooiman of Orange City at the intersection with Marsh Avenue.
Dykstra sustained critical injuries and was transported to Sanford Sheldon Medical Center. Kooiman and 18 students from Unity Christian High School were taken to Orange City Area Health System with injuries ranging from minor to serious. One student was transferred to Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls for further treatment.
The incident is under joint investigation by the sheriff’s office and the Iowa State Patrol. Incident Command was activated at the Orange City Area Health System to manage care and communication. Parents were directed to the hospital to reunite with their children.
Emergency response teams from multiple departments, including Orange City Police, Hospers and Granville Fire Departments, and several ambulance services, assisted at the scene. The investigation into the accident is ongoing.
