47 Years Later, Northwest Iowa Cold Case Remains Open

This past weekend marked a somber milestone — 47 years since a body was discovered near the West Lyon School.

Over the decades, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office has seen many personnel changes, but one thing has remained constant: the ongoing effort to solve the case. Current Sheriff Brian Hilt, now in his first year in office, is the latest to take up the investigation. Hilt provided a brief overview of the case.

Wilma June Nissen’s daughter, Krissi Atkisson, continues her personal mission to uncover the truth about her mother’s death — why she was found in that ditch, and who is responsible. Sheriff Hilt says new forensic tools may finally provide the kind of insight that investigators have long hoped for.

He highlighted one of the latest technologies that could assist in advancing the case.

Still, Hilt cautions that while DNA testing and modern methods are valuable, a resolution may ultimately depend on new evidence or someone coming forward with a confession or credible information.

Despite the passage of nearly half a century, Hilt says the case remains active and investigators are not giving up. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office by emailing coldcase@lyoncountyia.com
