A three-car crash sent two people to the hospital Tuesday morning. The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office reports the crash occurred at the intersection of Highway 18 and Jackson Avenue at 6:56am.
60-year-old Wade Haarsma of Boyden was travelling westbound on Highway 18 in a Ford Ranger; 16-year-old Kolby Heemskerk of Sheldon was also westbound on Highway 18, behind Haarsma in a Dodge Dart. Haarsma stopped at the intersection, yielding to oncoming traffic before turning left. Heemskerk struck the Haarsma vehicle, sending it into the eastbound lane of Highway 18 where it struck an eastbound Chevrolet Malibu driven by 57-year-old David Van Egdom of Hull.
Heemskerk and Van Egdom were taken to Sanford-Sheldon Hospital for treatment of their injuries. Haarsma declined further medical treatment.
Damage to the Ford was estimated at $8,000; the Dodge sustained about $10,000 in damage, and the Chevrolet sustained approximately $7,000 in damage.
Heemskerk was cited for following too close.
