The Northwest Iowa Genealogical Society will meet at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 18, in the fourth‑floor study hall of the Plymouth County Historical Museum in Le Mars. After the group’s usual business, President Iris Hemmingson will switch gears and present a special program titled “Grant Wood, Artist in Overalls.” Grant Wood, the Iowa native behind the iconic American Gothic, is known for his distinctive landscapes and his unique sense of humor — elements that have inspired Iris ever since her days studying Home Economics at Iowa State University, where she first encountered Wood’s murals.
Iris has been a familiar face in the Le Mars community since moving there with her husband Les in 1965, and she’s led NWIGS for “more years than she can remember.”
The public is invited, admission is free, and refreshments will be served. The program is especially fitting as the nation celebrates its 250th birthday — a look at an artist whose most famous work rivals the Mona Lisa in recognition.
