The Northwest Iowa Genealogical Society meets Saturday, September 19th at 1:30 p.m. at the Plymouth County Historical Museum in Le Mars. After introductions and a brief business meeting, guest speaker Lynn Steckelberg will share updates on The Last Gift, a local program dedicated to identifying and honoring individuals buried in unmarked graves.

Steckelberg will expand on his March 2025 presentation about Potter’s Field efforts in Le Mars and explain how to navigate the city’s website to search cemetery records — noting that ‘the website can be a very useful tool for anyone trying to locate a gravesite.’

Members first learned about The Last Gift when founder Steve Kolker introduced the mission several years ago. Each identified individual receives documented details of their life, a proper tombstone, and a graveside service — ensuring an enduring legacy.

Steckelberg, a retired Plymouth County Sheriff’s officer and active representative of The Last Gift, will also answer questions about the program and how community members can help. The event is free and open to the public, with refreshments to follow.
