Red meat production sees year-over-year decline

The USDA says March red meat production dropped 11 percent on the year.

Beef production declined 12% to 2.1 billion pounds, with total cattle slaughter at 2.51 million head, down 15% from the previous year.

Pork production was down 10% on the year, with total hogs slaughtered down 9% from March 2023. 

Cattle weights were up 26 pounds, while hog weights declined 3 pounds from the previous year.

January to March red meat production dropped 2 percent from 2023.  Beef production was down 4% on the year while pork was up slightly. 

Dairy Cows

The UDSA says dairy cow slaughter for March 2024 was 244,600 head, down 8,100 from last month and down 61,600 from March 2023.
