Michigan farmers filling freezers

Young farmers are increasing access to local meat at some Michigan food banks.

Sanilac County’s Darcy Lipskey tells Brownfield her local farm bureau often donated a county fair animal to local food pantries, but there was a storage problem.

“We have eight food pantries in Sanilac County and only one had a freezer,” she explains. “That freezer was only above a refrigerator so if we donated a whole beef, there was no way that whole beef was going to fit.”

Lipskey spearheaded an effort to get deep freezers in place at all food banks in the county.  Other farmers also wanted to contribute, but again ran into roadblocks.
