The H5N1 virus has been detected in a Minnesota dairy herd. Minnesota’s Board of Animal Health confirms the herd is in Benton County northeast of St. Cloud.
A spokesman for the board says the farmer noticed a few cows with symptoms over the weekend, and it spread to more than 40 cows the next day. Samples were collected Monday and confirmed as H5N1 Thursday.
The cows are expected to recover, and their milk is being disposed of.
