Two Separate Four-Vehicle Crashes Investigated Thursday

Two separate crashes involving four vehicles each occurred late Thursday afternoon during inclement weather.  The first was at 5:01 p.m. on Cherry Avenue two miles north of Hawarden.  All four vehicles were driving north on Cherry Avenue.  15-year-old Charles Houlton of Ireton, was driving a Toyota Camry; 17-year-old Karsen Van Oort, of Ireton, was driving a Jeep Wrangler behind Houlton. 65-year-old Shawn Munns, of Hawarden, was driving a Ford F-250, and was stopped behind Van Oort.  58-year-old Joanne Munns, of Hawarden, driving a Cadillac Escalade, struck the rear of the F-250; the F-250 then struck the Jeep, which was pushed forward and struck the Toyota. 

 

Two injuries were reported; 58-year-old Joanne Munns was taken to the Hawarden Hospital by private vehicle, Shawn Munns was taken by ambulance to the Hawarden hospital – both for treatment of minor injuries.  Joanne Munns was cited for following too close.

 

The second four-vehicle crash occurred at 5:17 p.m. three miles north of Orange City on 400th Street.  The same situation occurred due to poor visibility, with all vehicles travelling east on 400th Street.  60-year-old Santos Fragoso of Albuquerque, NM; 28-year-old Kyle Strom, of Granville, was behind Fragoso; 45-year-old Ryan Hoekstra, of Orange City, was behind Strom. 38-year-old Bethany Vandam, of Orange City, was behind Hoekstra. Fragoso slowed his vehicle, Strom struck Fragoso, Hoekstra struck Strom, and VanDam struck Hoekstra.  No injuries were reported in that crash.
