Council Approves Favorable Bid For Indoor Turf Dome

The fabric membrane covering the planned American State Sports Complex in Sioux Center, will be made by a company in Minnesota. The Sioux Center City Council approved offering a letter of intent on the low bid for the fabric dome from Yeadon Domes, of Minneapolis, which was about $700,000 lower than the competing bid. The council also approved the general plans and specifications for the sports complex.
The next steps for constructing the community’s new indoor turf facility will be to pursue a bid for the remaining work, and begin construction in spring 2022.
The council also approved a Shared-Use 28E agreement with Dordt University to create an official partnership for the development and operations of the indoor turf facility, which is a joint effort between the city and the university. The agreement includes a 50/50 split for capital and operation costs for the complex.
City Manager Scott Wynja says the proposed 30-year agreement with Dordt spells out the expectations of each respective party, and is similar to other past agreements that includes costs for construction of the facility and how the joint operations will work. It also establishes a committee that will meet on a quarterly basis to review operational information, schedules, and other pertinent details.
Completion of the 118,000-square-foot American State Sports Complex is slated for December 2022. The complex will be designed to allow for a wide range of athletics, tournaments and competitions, community wellness programs, and rentals. The design includes space for spectators to watch and an 8,000-square-foot head-end building with changing areas, concessions, and seating. It is estimated the facility will see more than 200,000 visitors each year.
