An accident injured three people near Sioux Center Sunday.  The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene at the intersection of Hickory Avenue and 390th Street, one mile east of Sioux Center, at 3:56 Sunday afternoon.

80-year-old Joleen Vermeer of Sioux Center was southbound on Hickory Avenue, in a Ford Explorer.  Vermeer slowed to turn east onto 390th Street when a GMC Sierra, driven by 24-year-old Nolan Geerdes of George, also southbound on Hickory, and behind Vermeer, tried to pass as Vermeer was turning.  The two vehicles struck and Geerdes lost control of the GMC he was driving, entered the east ditch and rolled.

Three passengers in the GMC were injured and transported to Sioux Center Health for treatment of those injuries.

28-year-old Penni Gengler, and 45-year-old Frederick Buckalew, both of George, and passengers in the GMC, were each cited for having an open container of alcohol. The driver, Nolan Geerdes was cited for passing in an intersection.

The accident remains under investigation.
