2020 Census Shows Sioux Center's Growth

Sioux Center’s population grew by more than 1,000 people in the past decade, coming in at 8,229 in the 2020 US Census.
In the 2010 US Census, Sioux Center’s population count was recorded at 7,048. The 2020 Census, just released, shows the community’s population grew by 1,181 people – almost 17%.
This puts Sioux Center in the top 3% of growing communities in Iowa based on population number change from 2010 and top 5% in Iowa based on percentage of growth from 2010.
“We are very pleased by our steady growth,” Sioux Center Mayor David Krahling said.
“Population alone isn’t the only measure of the success of a community, but it certainly is a strong indicator that people are choosing to live here. That’s a good sign. Much of what we do as a city is focused on preparing for continued growth, from both the utility and land development side.”
City Manager Scott Wynja shared that the City’s mission, to provide excellent quality of life and municipal services through a spirit of progressive cooperation, helps build a foundation for healthy growth.
“We spend a great deal of effort looking to the future and trying to be ahead of and prepare for future growth – residential as well as commercial and industrial,” Wynja said. “Developing property, installing infrastructure and maintaining good utilities, amenities, and attractions are all part of playing into that future growth.”
In terms of residential growth, in the past decade, 258 new single-family houses have been built in Sioux Center, along with 19 duplexes, 9 townhouse units and 6 apartment buildings (56 units).
Overall as a county, Sioux County’s population grew by 6.4%, one of about 27 Iowa counties that showed growth this decade.
“We are fortunate to be part of an area that is experiencing growth,” Mayor Krahling said. “Rural counties across the state have struggled to grow. We are an exception to that trend and that speaks well of the entire area, our agriculture community and our neighboring communities.”
