Sioux Center Police Will Participate in Safety Campaign For Holiday
July 01, 2021 2:45pm
The Sioux Center Police are joining law enforcement agencies across Iowa in the national Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign from July 2 to July 5. In an effort to combat impaired driving, officers will be exhibiting zero tolerance for impaired drivers.
“The 4th of July is a great time to celebrate with family and friends, and we are urging people to keep this holiday safe and keep impaired drivers off the roads,” said Sioux Center Police Chief Mike Halma.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, nationally, during the 2019 July 4th holiday period (the most recent statistics available), 515 people died in motor vehicle crashes and 198 of these fatalities occurred in an alcohol-impaired crash. In Iowa over the holiday in 2019, five people lost their life and three of these were due to alcohol related crashes.
An OWI arrest can cost up to $10,000 and could cause you to lose your license, car, and job. The Sioux Center Police are urging everyone planning to celebrate this holiday weekend, to make a plan – have a designated driver or call a rideshare service.
“Impaired driving is not only illegal and costly, it also puts everyone on the road in jeopardy,” Halma said. “Remember: If you feel different, you drive different.”
Iowa’s multi-discipline Traffic Fatality Reduction Task Force was created in 2021 to implement educational, enforcement and legislative initiatives to help Iowa achieve the target of less than 300 traffic fatalities annually, with the ultimate goal of zero fatalities. Enforcement is one key element to reduce fatalities. The task force is led by the Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau, the Iowa Department of Transportation and the Iowa State Patrol. For more information on the task force and its work, contact Pat Hoye, Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau at 515-725-6120 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
