Gehlen Students Raise $50,000 in Jaywalk-A-Thon
October 19, 2020 2:29pm
Gehlen Catholic School held its first-ever Jaywalk-a-thon fundraiser Friday. The event brought in $50,000 for Gehlen Catholic School, with the money going to art & teaching supplies, technology, field trips, PE equipment and more.
Each student was encouraged to raise $75 and the entire school had a goal of $30,000. The goal was surpassed by $20,000 and it was not only students who ended up fundraising.
“This is a testament to the Gehlen Catholic family and how much they support each other and our school. We encouraged students to fundraise, but our staff members got on board and many of them fundraised too! This shows that everyone here knows the importance of our fundraisers and it was humbling to see us all work together to ensure success!” said Development Director Amy Jungers.
Students walked the track outside of school for almost 7 hours straight as they were encouraged by the tagline: Fueled by Faith. Paced by Prayer. Each grade walked for a half hour during the school day while they prayed & reflected on special intentions that were turned in by family, friends and the community. After prayer and reflection plus a lap of silence, students were encouraged to have a great time while walking to fun, upbeat music.
Incorporating faith into the fundraiser could be seen in multiple places. Crosses that students decorated and wrote their own prayer intentions on surrounded the track to encourage students to pray for each other. The prayer intentions students and staff collected from family, friends and the community were gathered, and each placed on a small piece of paper. Students then held an intention or two in their hand while they walked their lap of silence in prayer and then placed the intention in a cross at the finish line.
Jaywalk-a-thon was created in place of two other student-driven fundraisers that were canceled at Gehlen Catholic due to COVID-19 concerns.
