NAIA Postpones Volleyball, Soccer & Cross Country Championships

The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) has announced the postponement of its cross country, soccer and volleyball championships this fall. In a vote by the Council of Presidents Tuesday, the decision was made to not cancel the championships, but instead move them to the spring of 2021 due to COVID-19.

Schools competing in those sports still retain the option of competing in the fall and winter if they choose to do so. Prior to Tuesday's vote, 51 NAIA institutions already had postponed fall athletic competition to the spring. Corey Westra, commissioner of the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) which includes Dordt and Northwestern, says at this time the conference's plan to move ahead with all fall sports remains the same, but as it has been from the start of the pandemic, the situation remains fluid.

Although the NAIA football championships are not affected by Tuesday's announcement, a decision on that sport is coming soon. The Council of Presidents has a football specific meeting scheduled for Friday.
