Sioux Center Police investigated a head-on collision in a construction zone on highway 75. The collision occurred about 6:30 Wednesday evening at the intersection of highway 75 and 13th St. SE in Sioux Center. 70 year-old Willard Vandehoef of Sioux Center was driving southbound on the highway when he encountered a dust cloud from road construction that caused him to lose visibility. Willard drifted into the northbound lane where he struck a northbound vehicle head-on. That vehicle was driven by 41 year-old Ricardo Avila Lopez of Rock Valley.
No injuries were reported, however damage estimates to Vandehoefs Honda Accord are estimated at $3,000; Avila Lopez Chevrolet pickup sustained approximately $2,000 in damage. Vandehoef told police he could not see the roadway due to the amount of dust; he was charged with driving on the wrong side of a two-way highway.
