Village Northwest Unlimited Cancels Annual 4th of July Fireworks For 2020
May 19, 2020 9:30am
The Independence Day Celebration, hosted each year on the campus of Village Northwest Unlimited in Sheldon, IA, will not take place in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Barry Whitsell, the President and CEO of Village Northwest Unlimited, in announcing the cancellation said, with the uncertainty of the continuation of the COVID-19 pandemic into the summer months and the need to continue to practice social distancing it would be impossible to host an event of this size on our campus and maintain social distancing to protect all participants. Whitsell noted, The individuals served at VNU are some of the most vulnerable people and during the pandemic protecting the health and well-being of our residents would not be possible if we brought the large crowds that attend the July 3rd celebration onto our campus. In addition, we are mindful of protecting the health of our staff as they are the frontline caretakers of those we serve. Whitsell went on to say, We want to be careful of the health and well-being of the people of Northwest Iowa and to host our event may compromise the health of others. Therefore, in an effort to safeguard the health of our residents, employees and the general public we have made the decision to cancel this years July 3rd Independence Day Celebration.
The July 3 Independence Day Celebration is an annual event that gives VNU the opportunity to give back to the community and thank people for their support of the Village and individuals with disabilities. Activities at the family-friendly event include carnival games, inflatables, fire truck rides from local fire departments, as well as various food booths from local vendors. The evening event is capped off at dusk with one of the most spectacular fireworks displays in Northwest Iowa.
Ryan Haack, Director of Development commented, The cancellation is a tremendous disappointment to our residents and staff who look forward to hosting this event each year. Many hours of preparation have already gone into the planning of this years event but we will now turn our focus toward making next years event even better.
