Hit-And-Run Causes Power Outage

A hit-and-run crash caused a city-wide power outage for Hawarden early Monday morning.

Sioux County Authorities investigated the crash one mile east of Hawarden on Highway 10 where they found a Pontiac Sunfire in a creek just north of the highway.  The investigation revealed the vehicle had been traveling northbound on Buchanan Avenue, crossed Highway 10, left the roadway, struck a support wire for an electrical utility pole and came to rest in a creek north of Highway 10; the driver of the vehicle had fled the scene.  The support wire detached from the utility pole and struck overhead power lines, causing a power outage for the City of Hawarden.

Investigating deputies located a wallet and identification belonging to Alfonso Martinez along with open containers of alcohol in the vehicle.

Deputies located Martinez at his residence and suspected that he was under the influence of alcohol, but Martinez denied driving the Pontiac that struck the electrical property.

The case remains under investigation.
