Longtime Iowa High School Basketball Coach Is Retiring

One of the state's most successful high school basketball coaches is retiring. Larry Hessing has spent nearly 40 years in coaching, the last 27 as the boys' coach at Pella Christian. Hessing made coaching stops in South Dakota and Minnesota and originally signed on as a math teacher at Pella Christian before replacing Jerry Nickel a few months later. Hessing won more than 69 percent of his games and finishes his career with 664 wins. A 1976 graduate of Dordt College, his first teaching position was at Ireton Christian School.
