Hawarden man sentenced in Sioux County District Court

A HAWARDEN MAN WAS SENTENCED IN SIOUX COUNTY DISTRICT COURT TUESDAY FOR BURGLARY, AND CRIMINIAL MISCHIEF. 18 YEAR OLD BRENDAN MICHAEL SCHURMAN, AND SEVERAL CO-DEFENDANTS WERE ACCUSED OF BURGLARIZING FOUR SEPARATE BUSINESSES IN THE HAWARDEN AREA BETWEEN NOVEMBER 2014, AND JANUARY 2015. SCHURMAN WAS SENTENCED FOR 3rd DEGREE BURGLARY, AND 4th DEGREE CRIMINAL MISCHIEF. HE WAS SENTENCED TO FIVE YEARS IN PRISON ON THE BURGLARY CHARGE, AND TO 365 DAYS IN JAIL FOR THE CRIMINAL MISCHIEF CHARGE. THE PRISON AND JAIL TERMS WERE BOTH SUSPENDED, AND SCHURMAN WAS PLACED ON PROBATION FOR THREE YEARS, AND ORDERED TO PAY RESTITUTION. HE WAS ALSO ORDERED TO COMPLETE A SUBSTANCE ABUSE EVALUATION AND FOLLOW ANY RECOMMENDED TREATMENT, ABSTAIN FROM ALL MOOD-ALTERING CHEMICALS, AND OBTAIN, AND MAINTAIN GAINFUL EMPLOYMENT OR BE ENROLLED AS A FULL TIME STUDENT, AND PROVIDE RANDOM URINALYSES UPON REQUEST, AS WELL AS A D-N-A SAMPLE FOR PROFILING.
