Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig kicked off his 99 county tour Monday, at Stensland Family Dairy Farm in Larchwood.

Naig and other officials with the Iowa Department of Agriculture used the opportunity to meet with local dairy farmers and hear how they're working to stay ahead in the market.

The Stensland family has been in the dairy business since 1915, and Secretary Naig wanted to see first-hand what exactly makes this dairy farm so successful.

With the recent decline in milk prices and changes in consumer demands, Naig said the Stensland family's business stands as a benchmark for overcoming challenges. He says Stensland is a good example of where a family has taken the opportunity to get into the processing side of things, to have a plan, to look at ice cream and cheese and fluid milk, and then to also own a retail outlet.

Doug Stensland is one of the co-owners of the family farm, and he says a big reason theyve been able to get past a lot of challenges is they not only produce milk but host a lot of tourists.

Stensland says if there's one thing he wants people to take away from his personal experience, is the importance of support. Nine family members are directly involved in the business, and Stensland says he and his wife wouldn't have gotten this far without them.
